About Union City

Alvarado and Decoto

Union City, Alameda County

Union City was formed in 1959, when the old towns of Alvarado and Decoto voted to merge. Alvarado had been the first seat of Alameda County in 1853 and was the site, in 1870, of the first successful beet sugar factory in the United States. Decoto grew up beside the railroad, and its grid of streets survives east of the tracks.
